John Tynan

Vice President of Campaigns


John is the Vice President of Campaigns at the U.S. Nature Initiative. At USNI John drives the design and implementation of strategic campaigns that secure durable, bipartisan support for nature.

John has 20 years of experience building bipartisan support for conservation. Prior to joining USNI, John served as President of Conservation Voters of South Carolina for 9 years. At CVSC, John and his team focused on driving bipartisan and pragmatic political action to protect the air, land, and water of South Carolina. He worked closely with leadership from both parties to build bipartisan coalitions to advance conservation policy in the Palmetto State. He came to CVSC in early 2016 as Political Director, serving as the chief political strategist for the organization and implementing election activities to support a slate of endorsed Republican and Democrat candidates.

Prior to joining CVSC, John oversaw the customer service, marketing, and government relations sections of Central Arkansas Water. He has also served as the Deputy Director of Upstate Forever and as an elected Commissioner of Public Works for the City of Greenville. John holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Furman University and a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University. He is also a 2010 Enviropreneur Fellow from the Property and Environment Research Center.

John and Mary Virginia Tynan have two human children and one dog that doubles as a mini pony. The whole pack of Tynans keep busy by fishing, swimming, hunting, hiking, and spending time in the mountains of SC.
